Throughout my adult years, I have always led an “unconventional life”. I have been labeled a hippie, gypsy, wanderer, Goddess and a slew of other nicknames. Someone once actually asked me if I was a “green Witch!” I recently read about the true gypsies and have decided I am definitely not a gypsy. althouhg I am a healer and have a deep connection with Mother Earth, I do not consider myself a “witch.” My own perception of my life is more in tune with that of a modern Bohemian. According to Urban Dictionary, a Bohemian is: “Someone who tries to live by the ideals of truth, freedom, love, and all those beautiful-sounding concepts.”
This morning I was reading the Tantric News and found a quote by Laren Stover, author of Bohemian Manifesto: A Field Guide to Living on the Edge
“To these (his list of 5 Bohemian lifestyle species), I’d like add to add a sixth variety of bohemian, the tantra bohemian. These brave souls attack respectable society at its very roots – family values and sexual hypocrisy. A variation of the Zen bohemian, their focus is on a blend of spirituality and sexuality, rather than art. But quite a few of them are artists too, but ones who realize that they can earn a better wage doing handjobs and tantric healings, than painting and sculpting and making music. Many live polyamorous lifestyles and espouse free love in practice rather than theory. Wielding a formidable blend of psychological and meditative techniques, their goal is to change the world by performing a collective global “second chakra healing” sometime around 2012. These are truly New Bohemians.”
Although I identify with the title Tantra Bohemian, I am a monogamous married woman with four stunningly beautiful and outrageously unique children. I home school my children so that I can ensure that they receive the best education while maintaining a physically active, inspiring and enriched life that is filled with art, music, laughter, beauty, friends and family. It has always been quite the dance to maintain my traditional relationship and family values with my alternative and somewhat unique lifestyle. With the above in mind, I would like to clarify my definition of a Tantra Bohemian. Of course, this is just my first draft, I will no doubt edit and revise my definition as my thoughts unfold.
Joy’s definition of a Modern Tantra Bohemian: An empowered and compassionate individual with an alternative or unconventional lifestyle who embraces human connection, heart centered communication, self-awareness and sexual rituals as a path to enlightenment and sensual awakening.
