Masturbation Dilemma: the Devil's Personal Sex Slave

on

I think of myself as a fairly intelligent and well informed being. I am also a spiritual being, although I was raised without religion. In fact, my adopted father who raised me was an atheist as a result of having religion ‘shoved down his throat’ as a child. His distaste may have also stemmed from his unfortunate encounters with a misguided priest, but that’s a story for another day.

Regardless of the root cause, in my house, reading the bible was outright forbidden. I picked it up and perused it at some point in my early adult life, but I have never actually sat down and read the entire bible. Hey, cut me some slack, I have wonderful husband and a gaggle of kids to nurture:-)

So, I guess it should be no surprise to me that I somehow missed this most important rule. According to an article I read yesterday, 3 of the top religions see masturbation as a sin! A sin that lands one in hell to dance with the devil for all of eternity!

Sorry, but WTF? I thought we had made more progress, but aparantly, I was wrong.  Of course I figured that the religious authorities that be considered playing with the palm sisters to be a minor infraction. I mean, seriously folks, healthy sexual exploration begins almost the second we are born; possibly even in utero. If something as innocent as children exploring their bodies is truly a ‘sin’, then, considering the state of the rest of our society, we are in serious trouble.

Throughout my years working as a healer, I have had hundreds of clients who were shameful because of their own obsessions with self pleasuring, but I had no idea that it was actually a sin worthy of going to hell. One of my past clients, a man in his late sixties, was dragged through his house and beaten by his mother in front of his siblings after she caught him masturbating! Her intention was to make an example of him to save his siblings from travelling down the hell-bound road of self-induced happy endings.

He came to me seeking permission to masturbate. Not to masturbate in my office, just permission in general. He was so traumatized by his mother’s reaction to catching him masturbating that he had completely severed his sexual energy. Until he came to see me, he had never spoken about his issues with another soul.

As a result, he was unable to have healthy intimate relationships. How sad is that? I was able to calm his nerves, allowed him to cry and talk about his shame and guilt. He did eventually manage to put the experience behind him and move on, but he spent most of his life ashamed of not only his sexual urges, but his sexuality in general.

I guess, if masturbation is truly a sin worthy of being cast into hell, I’m totally screwed! I’ll likely be the devil’s personal sex slave, forced to masturbate all day long and satisfy the devil’s never-ending sexual appetite…hmm…I think I could cope with that. I guess I’ll take the risk and keep self pleasuring!

For those of you who are religious, please do not take my comments personally; this post is not intended as an attack on religion. I just felt the need to express myself on this most imporatant and sensitive topic; I’m normally not this sarcastic or off the cuff, really, I swear!

I have the utmost respect for religions that teach and promote compassion, love, and respect for our fellow humans. What I cannot support is religious dogma that attacks an individual’s personal rights to self exploration, which I believe is one of the keys to overall well being and a vital ingredient in healthy relationships.

The prohibition is inferred from an incident of coitus-interruptus. A modern liberal interpretation would be to enjoy masturbation in moderation (like all other pleasures), and if one is in an intimate relationship one should not become so sexually self-focused that one neglects one’s partner.

Masturbation in moderation; I whole heartedly agree! For me, masturbation opens my mind and body to experiencing pleasure, which enhances my desire for my husband. Masturbation is also an integral part of our foreplay and deepens our connection, how beautiful is that? Thanks for your comments, David. From my heart to yours, Joy

I do not share your tolerance of religious brainwashing! I was raised an Anglican, my parents were (are!) High Church. Their reaction to any form of self exploration was swift and painful. I’m afraid I rebelled, big time, I dread to think what my parents would have thought of me had they been aware of my promiscuity between the ages of 13 and 20! As for religion in general, well, to each his own, but I for one cannot understand how anyone can inflict misery and suffering on others in the name of a God that should have intervened, unless of course that God is as cruel & pittyless as his (or her) followers!

Well, I have received my only, very mild, mind you, hate mail from a couple of very intense Christians. Although I wholeheartedly disagree with their assessment of me, Tantra, sexuality, and their negative belief system built up around masturbation, my post was an attempt at tolerance. I actually do not believe in the devil nor in hell. In fact, I attempt not to have beliefs. This is because I work with so many different people from all walks of life and with completely different belief systems. It is also because I work with so many people from different religious backgrounds that I attempt to understand and tolerate their freedom to choose whatever religious beliefs they need, but it most definitely does not mean that I agree.

I believe that most of the hogwash about healthy sexual expression and self exploration comes simply from a place of fear and a desire to control, whether it be parental or religious control. The essence of my post and my personal purpose was to lighten up and joke a little because I was feeling so inense about it. I posted on fb yesterday, “It ain’t easy bein’ green.” – Kermit the frog..I was actually talking about walking the earth with your truth publicly spoken. It can be tough! Thanks for sharing you rown challenges with the religious forces that be! You are an angel!
